Fasten off.
Make three feathers.
Layer them together and sew them onto the back of Mabel’s body.
Angle the feathers upward slightly so they create a fluffy chicken-tail effect.
Optional Wattles
For an extra cute Mabel, add two tiny red wattles underneath the beak.
Use red yarn.
Chain 3 and slip stitch back along the chain.
Make two tiny pieces.
Sew them directly beneath the beak.
Face Details
For a simple classic chicken, the safety eyes and little beak are enough.
For a more expressive Mabel, you can add:
- Tiny embroidered eyelashes
- Small pink cheeks
- Curved eyebrows
- A tiny smile
Use only a small amount of yarn for embroidered details.
Assembly
Once all the pieces are finished, check Mabel’s proportions before permanently sewing everything together.
- Attach the eyes.
- Sew the beak below the eyes.
- Place the red comb on top of the head.
- Attach both wings to the sides.
- Add the orange legs underneath.
- Sew the feet to the legs.
- Attach the three tail feathers at the back.
- Add optional wattles and cheek details.
- Hide all yarn ends securely inside the body.
Finishing Mabel
Give the finished chicken a gentle squeeze to distribute the stuffing evenly.
If you want Mabel to have a slightly fluffy appearance, gently brush the white yarn with a soft baby brush. Don’t brush aggressively because the yarn can loosen.
A tiny touch of pink blush on each cheek can also give her an adorable storybook appearance.
Color Ideas
You don’t have to keep Mabel completely white. Try:
- White body + yellow beak + red comb
- Cream body + orange details
- Pale yellow body + orange feet
- Light pink body + red comb
- Speckled brown and cream for a farmhouse chicken
- Pastel rainbow wings for an Easter-inspired version
